What is Chronic Sinusitis?
Sinusitis is similar to having a constant common cold. In other words, sinusitis is a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Allergies and other factors which interfere with normal protective mechanisms may precede the viral infection and therefore are also likely predisposing factors.
Any factor which induces swelling and fluid retention of the mucous membranes of the sinuses may cause blockage of drainage; bacterial overgrowth then occurs, with streptococci, pneumococci and staphylococci being the most commonly cultured.
In chronic sinus infections (sinusitis) an allergic background is commonly present, and in 25% of chronic sinusitis there is an underlying dental infection. Although antihistamines cause transient relief, it is not a good idea to continue its intake long term because of its negative side effects.
